★ 100 QUESTIONS Q&A ★

link to the questions!

1. Please introduce yourself.
dumby :P
2. How long have you been making websites?
if making tumblr themes semi-counts: since 2012. if only websites count: since 2016, that was the date i created my first neocities
3. And what got you into the hobby?
i saw websites i liked, and i wanted to make a website that i liked too. the motivation was really simple - my website didn't even have content until years later, i simply wanted it to look nice. it was mostly art and very little actual code (my index was many hand-drawn parts that interacted).
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
i most like resource-oriented websites, sometimes personal websites as well (only if i'm interested in what they have to say or post about)
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
50% of the time i actually draw my layout down in mspaint or on paper before i start, and the other 50% i just start going at it or i grab a simple template. it really depends on what im wanting to make. generally: i draw the layout if it's an index or hub, but i'll just start coding if it's a simple page: sitemap, small diary.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
logan surgerywaste.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
when it's finished and i can lovingly stroke the page with my cursor
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
definitely design, even though it's my main motivation for creating pages. sometimes i feel i have absolutely no design sense despite my interest in art.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
it is very seldom the same. this is actually the first time i've attempted to keep the layout a bit consistent, but i'm sure you can tell it's begun to deviate.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
out of the big three, it's probably my strongest suit.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
considering i dont even know what the hell that is - probably not, lol.
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
"<span>" my beloved
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
write "UNFINISHED SORRY" in the body and keep it saved that way until the first version is passable
14. Do you know JavaScript?
halfsies. unless it's something super simple (button opening a menu or section of text, swapping content out) then i will need to look it up and might struggle a bit.
15. How about PHP?
i needed to use it for university just a little, i'm no expert.
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
yes, both my sites have very distinct styles and purposes.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
design always takes huge preference. before i even begin to think about content i make sure i have the page first - which kind of sucks, because sometimes i realize i have nothing to add, and the page goes to waste.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
back in the day i had one of those free cheap ones from a post buzzing around on tumblr. it was like.... arakitas.bite.jp or something. it wasn't /actually that/, but it was similar. i don't know if that properly counts, but no i would probably not purchase a domain unless it was financially advantageous for me (sorry, im greedy).
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
im never going to outright shit on what anyone wants to do, but i have my opinions. i think it CAN be limiting if you are forcing yourself to code the way people used to code (it was pretty overly simple and even haphazardly done many times), or if you're forcing yourself just to copy an already existing design (OS, game UI, etc). even so, i grew up on geocities and WindowsME OS, so it does fill me with longing for the past. i would say, if it has a point (IE your page focuses on talking about the old web, old media, or OS/UI), then i love it. sometimes i feel pages look like windows 95 for positively no reason. but, who cares what i think? i have never ever gone away from someone's website without appreciating at least one thing about it.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
i dont go back in and check, but i do try to do things properly as i'm doing it, if that helps.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
i can't get enough of them. back in the geocities and deviantart days (i know DA is still around, but its not the same) my pages were PLASTERED with them to the point it was probably irritating. i think they're so much fun.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
i love it and will look through them
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
well, i basically did just start all over again with this website a couple months ago, and it's entirely different than my other website. like a serious 180. from edgy pseudo devil worshipper to cutesy anime/VN review page.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
i dont think envious is a good word...but sometimes i do feel kind of inadequate when i see something truly amazing
25. What text editor do you use?
notepad++
26. Why do you use that one?
i like the color coding the best out of any other editor ive used.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
i dont know why, but i do a mix lmfao. i used to host everything on other websites, but then i got (rightly) paranoid that one day all those other hosts might drop my files. but still, old habits die hard, i still sometimes draft my images on tumblr and paste the url in or i'll hotlink an image from another site.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
i actually only heard about nekoweb a month ago. their file editor is a little nicer looking, but i use CLI to push and pull code regardless so that perk is often lost on me. im probably going to stick to neocities, though, i struggle with change.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
currently using 99.76 MB of my gracious 1GB storage space
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
i try to, but...they become a mess as i make edits and don't always push or pull immediately.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
9 times out of 10, unless i really care about what you have to say, i like to look at the pretty decorations.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
YES i do. i come up with a color scheme immediately and stick to it religiously. my favorite color scheme is always black + a bright color (one site is black and red only, the other is black and green). this one happens to be a soft pastel rainbow.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
yes, i have essentially let my other website go. i had gotten bored of my site to the point that i only stuck around for the social-tivities, but when people kept trying to bring drama to me it was the nail in the coffin. i lost interest. apparently that sort of callout culture is actually quite common on here, and i think those types really ought to shove it. this is my place to relax - keep your witchhunts on twitter, i say. funnily enough their problem was with someone i had haphazardly linked on my site, for something they did AFTER i even linked them, and even removing the link did not quell them. whaaaaaat~ever.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
i have basically none from neocities itself. ive been invited to servers and emailed, but nothing really ever clicks. i'm a tad skittish, handle me with care!
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
yes, i usually tell them. though i once had someone reach out to me to ask if one of my side-sites belonged to me. that's how recognizable i am! hehe.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
oh yes, very often when i'm not busy. at least weekly, but at peak investment it can be daily.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
generally no, i keep the first rendition for a long time. i may add to it visually, but i do not change the overall structure. very rarely will i do a visual update, and when i do it generally involves changing the site as a whole.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
side-sites are me-focused, this site is an attempt to be hobby-focused. ive killed my attention span and want it back.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
no, but if someone tosses money my way i will make them a page or two.
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
yes, sure. i'm almost finished with my computer science degree, but i wouldn't mind doing front-end dev.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
i get a couple emails per month. i very very seldom reach out unless i have a question.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
i do have social media, but not in any meaningful way anymore. meaning i only follow a few people and don't post. it's really bad for my brain to get too into it.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
i use discord only, i enjoy it. i like streaming videos and games, talking, texting and such. i don't use any other platforms. telegram does creep me out, though.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
yes, and much like driving when i'm stressed or get pissed off i'll pause it until i'm relaxed again. i usually listen to things that are easy on the ears when working, and when playing games i listen to grating gabrage.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
i have a total of three websites, i may make even more.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
one general theme, but many topics.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
everyone has some degree of a persona. i try to keep a persona heavily on, but my real self always shines through.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
i have not, i dont think id find someone like that here.
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
yeah, never had any problems. i can't think of much i'm not able to accomplish.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
basically everything i've ever done: hotlinking, not using CLI / editing only on neocities text editor with guesswork, not keeping backup versions. other things: don't rely on AI too much. i'm not really anti-AI outright, just don't stifle your skills and creativity. if you're going to use it then it should aid your learning, not hinder it.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
i always recommend people take a page out of my book, draw your webpage before you make it. seriously it really helps.
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
i far prefer non-semantic
53. Do you consider different browsers?
once i'm completely satisfied with my website, yes. but until then i only care if it works on my browser, various common screen sizes, and cellphones (sorry~)
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
i use chrome, but it's dogshit. don't use it, i'm just way too used to it to stop now.
55. And what OS are you on?
Windows
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
i grew up on it, so thus i continue to use it. i don't mind linux, but it's not what's most comfortable for me.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
generally yes! mobile compatibility is not my first thought, but i do get to it fairly quickly. i believe even my casino works fine on mobile, even if it's not ideal (kind of unavoidable).
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
not even kidding my ears were assaulted violently 15 minutes ago, and it pissed me off so badly that i regretfully wished for their immediate death.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
don't shoot me...i find them pointless. i never look at them and i will never join one.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
ive never made a shrine. ive thought about it, my anime reviews are like half-shrines.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
i dont think so, but i suppose a website dedicated to anime reviews isn't unique...
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
my current website is pretty ideal for me, but of course it could always be better.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
yes, and yes! i had a friend help with some of my assets and some are free, but on my side site i drew everything i used.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
whenever i need anything i search tumblr. frames, dividers, tiling assets.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
probably everything about the way i code. i still have a bad habit of repeatedly doing guesswork rather than live-viewing my changes as i work (example: margin-left:15px; too far? ok margin-left:20px. not quite there? ok margin-left:22px. too much?...).
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
don't be afraid to experiment or be corny. just do as you please in regards to your site. yadda yadda people who mind don't matter.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
i do both all the damn time. whatever gets the job done, who cares.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
i dont know if ive ever used this. i tackle things as they come with google, but this doesn't stand out.
69. How about table-based layouts?
if i need an actual excel-looking table yeah i'll do it. woudn't do an index that way though.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
i'm partial to two and three column. i love the clutter of three column and the organization of two column. if two column i generally keep one column a little slimmer.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
oh CSS by a longshot
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
sure, most my pages start out that way.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
i have made plenty of pages for absolutely no reason. i even have a collection of pages i have no use for on my side-site.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
i don't have the confidence to call myself advanced, but there isn't much i can't do at this point.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
constantly. don't bother disabling right click i will ctrl+U your ass!!
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
simply by doing, i never used tutorials because i don't have the patience and i think it makes me work too statically (when ive used tutorials in other areas).
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
if it's capable of being done is it really not supposed to be done? i'm sure i probably have. i used to be pretty notable on sites that have injectable custom css for my ability to completely transform the layout with no html involved. used to make layouts for money, even.
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
not everything needs a container.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
px > % > em
80. Do you have a favourite font?
hell the fuck yes i do. ms gothic and ms pgothic. besides for headers i will only use that font generally.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
no way, im much too controlling, if they added something i didn't like i'd quietly remove it. i would become jealous of every compliment given to the site because id feel the need to butt in with "hehe i did that part~" and "that was all me~", because im terrible.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
just about daily. i browse geocities preservation sites to look back at the old.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
no, but dont feel bad, because i have no bookmarks at all. i dont know why. i would feel pretty flattered if someone did, however!
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
i would be happy if people thought to themselves that i am doing something unique.
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
i dont collect, but yes i am fascinated by older technology in particular. i even prefer it, do you know how much bloatware is installed into everything we have now?
86. How often and for how long are you online?
...nearly 24/7...
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
honestly, when i think about it...myself LOL. realistically i suppose anime/VN fans.
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
not once.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
yes!!! yes i do. i love making simple chrome extensions and .py software. i made my own diary app...i wonder if any of you would be interested in using it?
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
whadda fug is dis!
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
nope, only back in my tumblr days. i stopped because i felt like a creep for tracking people. you can track me, however~
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
only when i was a child, i frequented anime forums and chatrooms.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
i do both probably completely equally, couldn't tell you why.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
plenty of people have said im cool, and plenty of people have said i seem weird/creepy/annoying. i honestly couldn't give a shit how i come off.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
only ever because i'm embarrassed of the content. ive never been embarrassed about having an ugly/poorly made page.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
well...im pretty satisfied with the casino and look of my index, so i guess id leave it up. but id be extremely frustrated watching my diary and reviews stay stagnant.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
i always think im secretive, but ive been recognized by irl and online friends without even sharing my sites/profiles plenty of times. i think my typing style, interests, and life experiences are a bit identifiable.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
my friends are linked on my side-site, but im not trying to mention an unrelated website here too much.
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
no, i am sorry. lol.
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
im fast and used to do plenty of these, took me an hour! it was fun.
